Twins outfielder Byron Buxton battled hip injuries for most of his 2026 campaign. The issue finally led to surgery in September. Buxton is progressing well in his recovery and is on track to be healthy for the 2027 season, per Dan Hayes of The Athletic.
Buxton had arthroscopic right hip surgery on September 18. He’ll continue to rehab the injury through December, and then turn his attention toward preparing for next season.
“I’m just trying to make sure I do everything I’m supposed to,” Buxton said, relayed by Hayes. “It’s been good. I feel better. It’s good to be able to feel a little bit better since then. I’m moving around a little bit, so that’s progress, for sure.”
While he didn’t go on the IL until July, Buxton dealt with nagging hip pain as early as May. He played through the injury and put up a monster first half. Buxton posted a .926 OPS in June, including eight home runs. He aggravated the hip injury on a stolen base attempt against the Yankees on July 5 and went on the IL. The ailment was initially described as a hip strain.
Buxton returned shortly after the All-Star Break, but only made it through seven games. He was pulled from a matchup against the Athletics and went right back on the IL. This time, the injury was termed a hip impingement. Buxton made it through 11 games in August before going on the IL a third and final time.
As has been the case for most of his career, Buxton was productive when healthy. He delivered a 128 wRC+ with 25 home runs in 93 games. Those numbers looked even better if you ignore the post-IL numbers. Buxton hit just .172 with zero home runs and a .203 SLG after his initial IL stint. Heading into July, he was slashing .268/.325/.573, which earned him his third All-Star selection.
The Twins’ front office was adamant about not trading Buxton this summer. General manager Jeremy Zoll reiterated that sentiment earlier this week.
“We need to get (Buxton) through this rehab process,” Zoll said, relayed by Hayes. “But he wants to be here, we want him here, and we’re really excited about that future together.”
Buxton has two seasons remaining on the seven-year, $100MM extension he signed at the end of the 2021 campaign. He’s due $15MM in both 2027 and 2028. The contract included full no-trade protection, but only through 2026. Buxton has limited say in trades for the final two seasons of the deal. He’s able to block deals to five teams.
Minnesota has missed the playoffs in each of the past three seasons. The club hasn’t finished better than third in the AL Central since winning the division in 2023. The Twins were above .500 heading into August this year, but went 21-30 over the final two months of the season and faded out of the Wild Card race.
Buxton would certainly have suitors in the trade market if Zoll and company change their stance on moving him. The remaining money on his contract is far from exorbitant, especially for a middle-of-the-order bat who’s hit 60 home runs over the past two seasons. Buxton even proved he could still play center field this year. After posting -5 Defensive Runs Saved in 2025, he was back up to 2 DRS this season.
