War's [Spoiler] Addresses Show's Shocking Series Premiere Twist ...Middle East

News by : (Us magazine) -

HBO’s War got off to a strong start, which in large part had to do with a twist introduced at the end of the series premiere.

During the Thursday, October 1, episode of the legal drama, viewers are introduced to two prestigious law firms in London: Cathcarts and Taylor & Byrne. They face off in court in a divorce case involving tech entrepreneur Morgan (Dominic West) and his film star wife, Carla (Sienna Miller).

Archie Renaux‘s character, Johnny, meanwhile is an ambitious young lawyer who is trying to find a job after moving from New York. He applied to different jobs in the pilot — including a position at Cathcarts that didn’t appear to work out.

Toward the end of the episode, Morgan’s legal team told him they planted a mole at Taylor & Byrne — who turned out to be none other than Johnny. He got a job close to Carla’s lawyers as a way to get intel for the other side.

“Honestly, the first two scripts that I read, I was so happy and excited [by them],” Renaux, 28, exclusively told Us. “And I was really like, ‘Oh my god, I have to do this part. It’s so much fun.'”

He continued: “I really, really felt lucky getting to do that. It’s a really, really good part. Getting to drive the story a little bit between the two law firms and be the eyes and the ears for the audience in the two offices [was great].”

The new show is focused on a fictional famous couple going through a contentious divorce but inspiration was pulled from real events.

“We have a brilliant lawyer consultant called Catherine who works with lots of high-powered divorce cases,” creator George Kay told Us. “And at the beginning of the process, I was thinking we’re going to want to pilfer every celebrity divorce — like a dastardly maneuver and everything like that.”

The vision shifted as they went further into production. “Then, having written the show, the more you want to do is just write the characters you’ve created,” he continued. “So that kind of went out the window after a while, and we ended up having to think of our own dastardly things.”

West, 56, for his part, was excited to explore his character.

“There’s a podcast called ‘Good Bad Billionaire’ and it’s a really good podcast. They do a bit of one billionaire per program and then at the end they decide whether they’re good, bad or just another billionaire,” he told Us. “And I think three billionaires have been good so far. So I was to play a benign billionaire and I thought that was an interesting thing because I’m not sure they exist.”

He added: “They do obviously exist but some most billionaires are the worst people on the planet. So that was what was interesting was trying to play a guy who’s ruthless and competitive but who’s got a heart and he’s trying to do good.”

War airs on HBO Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET and will be available to stream on HBO Max.
