Examining the number of sexual assault cases on Rochester-area college campuses amid lawsuit against Cornell University ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — News10NBC’s Garrett Chan looked into the prevalence of sexual assault cases on college campuses and how many cases get reported.

Cornell University released its Survey of Sexual Assault and Related Misconduct last October. The university has surveyed students every year since 2021 to learn more about sexual assault cases, but only about 15% of students asked to take the 2024 survey participated, which was the lowest turnout in years.

The survey found 35% of undergraduate women at Cornell reported nonconsensual sexual contact involving force or incapacitation, while 8% of undergraduate men said they experienced the same.

“This number of 1 in 5 women has been consistent now for a few decades. This is not a new problem. This campus climate or the survey that we have from Cornell, you know, it’s showing a higher percentage than that sort of national average,” Palumbo said.

Laura Palumbo is the communications director from the National Sexual Violence Resource Center.

“Not only is there this high prevalence rate, but the research over time has also shown us that a young woman is more likely to be sexually assaulted if she attends college than if she doesn’t,” Palumbo said.

The most recent data from the University of Rochester’s website showed that in the 2023-2024 academic year, the school had 20 reports of sexual assault. Nazareth University had the highest number of sexual assault reports in 2025 with more than 160 cases. RIT’s annual security report from 2024 reported 19 rape cases on campus.

“Sexual assault is the most underreported crime. And so often times, survey data gives us a lot more accurate of a picture of the prevalence. Then, the actual number of reports would. If a university is showing very, very low numbers, that to me is a red flag of, of whether or they’re handling reports, effectively and responding and in handling them with transparency,” Palumbo said.

Palumbo said students and families should know the resources available for students to report sexual assault and ask questions about schools’ prevention programs.

News10NBC reached out to the University of Rochester, RIT and Nazareth University to ask if they are taking any additional action to help students report sexual assault but has not heard back. Check back for any updates.
