Inside T.J. Edwards’ Viral Return to the Eagles Huddle, Huge Interception, and Early Season Spark ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

I got a hoot out of T.J. Edwards turning back the clock, joining his old Eagles teammates in the huddle, then returning to his linebacker spot with the Bears to intercept a Jalen Hurts pass in Chicago’s 27-7 win on Monday Night Football.

If you were curious about what was learned from that viral moment of Edwards dropping in on the Eagles, the answer is nothing. But it’s kinda funny:

Asked T.J. Edwards after the game if he heard anything in the Eagles' huddle: "No. I was like, 'Maybe I'll hear some familiar stuff,' and like they must have changed language up because I had no idea what they were talking about." t.co/uT9r4NPBST

OK, so T.J. Edwards didn’t steal any signs or know the play was coming. That might take some of the fun out of it for you, but not for me. In fact, Edwards’ splash play pushed me to dig into his early season production. And I’m happy to share that it is full of pleasant surprises.

T.J. Edwards is Off to a Strong Start in 2026

T.J. Edwards is living the dream. The 30-year-old linebacker is a Chicagoland native playing for the team he rooted for growing up. In 2025, he lived the dream of playing for his hometown team in the playoffs. Unfortunately, injuries kept Edwards out of seven regular-season games. Then, a serious ankle injury in the Bears’ playoff win against the Green Bay Packers kept him out of the team’s playoff game against the Los Angeles Rams. So seeing Edwards bounce back from an injury-riddled 2025 to start strong in 2026 is encouraging.

WEEK 3: Grades | Nightcap | Good, Better, Best | 24-Hour Rule

I realize Pro Football Focus grades aren’t the be-all and end-all. But I think they can add depth, context, and perspective when you look at the bigger picture. That said, it felt good seeing Edwards’ PFF grades and advanced metrics. For instance, Edwards’ 73.7 overall grade ranks 14th among 71 qualifying off-ball linebackers. His 84.8 coverage grade is the third-best among players at his position. Edwards is trending up. He posted overall grades of 89.9 (vs. the Vikings in Week 2) and 91.6 (vs. the Eagles in Week 3) after putting up a woeful 32.2 overall grade in the season opener.

If PFF grades aren’t your thing, that’s fine. I found another stat showing Edwards’ week-to-week improvement. After missing four tackles on 68 defensive snaps in Week 1, he’s missed just one on 102 snaps played in the two games that followed. That might be my favorite nugget from my look into Edwards’ performance so far.

TI.J. EDWARDS POPS UP ON ESPN’S SURVEY OF NFL’S BEST LBs

T.J. Edwards isn’t stuffing the stat sheet like he did when he arrived in 2023, when he led the team in total tackles (155) and solo tackles (91) while posting a career-high in quarterback hits (8). Nor has he been a menace in the backfield as he was in 2024, when he racked up a career-best 12 tackles-for-loss and 4 sacks. But with playmakers like rookie defensive backs Dillon Thieneman and Malik Muhammad and a defensive line showing some fight, the Bears don’t need Edwards to be carry the load. Instead, they need him to keep doing the little things and making plays when they come his way.

A tackle-for-loss that stops a ball-carrier before they can hit a hole and break off a big gain, an open-field third-down stop that leads to a punt, and a timely interception (like the one mentioned above) are exactly what the Bears defense needs. I hope current trends continue, as a stabilizing presence in the middle of that defense would be appreciated.
