Julie Andrews is 91 today. Born Oct. 1, 1935, in Surrey, England, the actress has spent more than seven decades on stage, screen and television, and fans around the world are celebrating her.
Her career started young. She performed as a child with her mother and stepfather, and at 13 she became the youngest solo performer to appear at the Royal Variety Show, singing for King George VI.
Broadway made her a star, with The Boy Friend, My Fair Lady and Camelot. Then came film. She won the Oscar and a Golden Globe for Mary Poppins, and she followed it by playing Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music, which earned her another Oscar nomination and a Golden Globe.
Television added to the shelf. She won an Emmy for The Julie Andrews Hour in the 1970s, and later introduced herself to a new generation as Queen Clarisse in The Princess Diaries.
The honors kept coming. Queen Elizabeth II made her a dame in 2000. She has also received the Kennedy Center Honors and life achievement awards from the Screen Actors Guild and the American Film Institute.
Andrews has been just as busy as an author. With her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, she has co-written a string of children’s books, including the picture book Shy, which hit shelves Aug. 11 and was inspired by her real-life grey poodle. More recently, she voiced Lady Whistledown in Netflix’s Bridgerton.
Off screen, Andrews married director Blake Edwards in 1969. Emma is her daughter from her first marriage to Tony Walton, and she and Edwards adopted two daughters, Amelia and Joanna.
Her story is also headed back to the screen, this time as the subject. Disney+ will premiere a documentary about her life in 2027 from director R.J. Cutler, with rare archival footage and new interviews.
