Thousands will gather this weekend along the lakefront in Chicago for one of the largest suicide prevention walks in the nation.
The 2026 Out of the Darkness Walk takes place starting at 10 a.m. Saturday at Montrose Harbor.
Suicide is one of the third leading causes of death for those aged 15 to 35, and the fourth for those aged 35 to 54 in Illinois.
The event is organized by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. It raises awareness about suicide prevention and mental health issues, as well as raises money for research and advocacy efforts.
As of Thursday morning, the event has raised over $721,000 from just under 8,000 donations. The final goal is to reach $1 million raised.
The event is free, but registration is required.
NBC Chicago’s Stefan Holt will serve as this year’s Emcee.
