17-year-old Lukas Dunn from the Knox Pymble Swim Club in NSW, Australia has smashed the Australian Age Record in the 200 IM.

Dunn finished 3rd on Thursday at the Australian Short Course Championships in 1:54.73, about 1.3 seconds behind the leaders David Schlicht (1:53.45) and William Petric (1:53.53).

In the process, Dunn smashed the Australian Age Record previously held by short course legend Kenneth To at 1:57.47 in 2009. To, who died in 2019 at age 26, still holds nine other short course meters Australian Age Records even 15 years after his age group career ended.

Dunn’s finals result followed a 1:56.97 in prelims that also broke the previous record.

His previous best time was a 1:57.65 done in July at the New South Wales Metropolitan Short Course Championship. The shift in strategy since July is made clear by his splitting: while he opened the race a full second slower on the butterfly and backstroke legs, he obliterated his prior splits on the closing breaststroke and freestyle legs.

Dunn now sits just a tenth outside of the all-time top 10 men in Australian history in this event. Petric’s swim moves him to 8th-fastest all-time in Australian history.

Dunn’s previous swims in the meet included a 7th-place finish in the 50 fly (23.47), and a 23rd-place finish in the 100 free (48.74). The 50 fly was a new best time by almost a second (his previous best was from 2024), but his 100 free missed a best time by .01.
