It’s been 47 years since the Little River Band released one of their biggest songs, “Lonesome Loser.” Decades later, it’s still a yacht rock classic.

Written by David Briggs for the Australian soft rock band’s album First Under the Wire, “Lonesome Loser” features a  ‘70s guitar-driven pop rock melody with strong harmony vocals as it tells a story of gambling one’s heart away. “Beaten by the queen of Hearts every time,” vocalists Glenn Shorrock, Graeham Goble, and Beeb Birtles sing in unison.

The song reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 in September 1979.

Briggs once revealed that he was inspired to write “Lonesome Loser” while staying at a hotel in Boston.

“The song was written at the Boston Colonnade Hotel,” he shared in a press release. “I used to write ideas on the letterhead of the hotels we stayed at. I still have that song lyric idea on that letterhead.”

The song impressed record executives from the get-go.

“When we had our first meeting with Capitol personnel on arrival in the USA to promote First Under the Wire, I recall Rupert Perry, who would ultimately become the head of Capitol Records, coming up to me, shaking my hand, and expressing he had no idea that I could write a song like ‘Lonesome Loser,’” Briggs shared. “It was the only LRB song to be nominated for a Grammy for the Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus in 1979.”

Little River Band singer Glenn Shorrock once revealed that he wanted “Lonesome Loser” to have a “Heard It Through The Grapevine” feel

“We steered away from the a capella opening harmony and just set up a groove that fit like ‘I Heard It Through the Grapevine,'” he said in an interview with Songfacts. “If you listen to it in that respect. It’s funky, it’s good. I wanted the record to sound funky. I wanted it to sound live.”

He also revealed that there was no hesitation on the record’s label’s part to release a song with the title “Lonesome Loser.”

“It’s something that I thought of, briefly,” he admitted. “But it’s such a strong song and it’s about redemption, as well. That didn’t really hinder that as the release of that as a single.”

Once it was released, “Lonesome Loser” didn’t take long to become a hit. Briggs once noted in an interview, “That was the most played song in America for three weeks was an incredible period of time and it was a terrific achievement for the band and I was thrilled to the back teeth.”

Nearly 50 years after its release, “Lonesome Loser” remains one of the Little River Band’s signature songs, inspired in a hotel room and going on to become a yacht rock classic that’s still winning decades later.
