Madison, Wisconsin’s Max Garbacz has announced his verbal commitment to the University of Michigan for 2028-29. He wrote about his decision on social media:

“I am beyond excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Michigan! First, I want to thank God for guiding me and giving me this opportunity. Thank you to my mom and dad for supporting me over the years and always believing in me, and to my club coaches, Jake and Shane, for pushing me to my limits everyday in the pool and helping me become the swimmer I am today. Finally, thank you to Coach Gunnar, Coach Matt, and the rest of the Michigan staff for believing in me. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to be part of this incredible school and program in the near future. Go Blue!!!!! ”

Garbacz attends Madison West High School and swims year-round for Madison Aquatic Club. A talented backstroke/IM specialist, we ranked him #17 on our Way Too Early list of top boys’ swimming recruits from the high school class of 2028.

In high school swimming, Garbacz won the 200 IM (1:47.29) and 500 free (4:31.06) as a sophomore at last year’s WIAA Boys’ Division I State Championships. Both times were lifetime bests, as was his 100 free (46.14) on the leadoff leg of Madison West’s 8th-place 400 free relay. Garbacz also split a 21.04 on the 5th-place 200 free relay. As a freshman in 2025, he had swum the 200 IM and 100 back, placing 3rd and 2nd, respectively.

Garbacz had a big meet at Winter Juniors East last December, finaling in the 200 back (15th), 200 IM (19th), and 400 IM (5th), and hitting lifetime bests in the 100 back (49.85), 200 back (1:46.33), 200 IM (1:48.31), and 400 IM (3:52.12).

Three months later at the Wisconsin LSC Senior Championships, he broke 49 seconds for the first time in the 100 back, clocking in at 48.91 in prelims. He also notched PBs in the 50 free (21.72), 200 free (1:40.08), 1000 free (9:20.33), and 50 back (23.36). At the NCSA Spring Championships, he lowered his 100 back time to 48.75 and swam PBs in the 200 back (1:45.31), 100 fly (49.21), and 400 IM (3:51.25).

Garbacz had a big long-course season, as well, culminating in a slew of lifetime bests at Summer Junior Nationals, including the LCM 50 back (26.54), 100 back (56.74), 200 back (2:02.82), 200 IM (2:04.13), and 400 IM (4:25.42). He finaled in the 50 back (25th), 100 back (19th), 200 back (10th), 200 IM (5th), and 400 IM (11th).

Best SCY times:

100 back – 48.75 200 back – 1:45.31 200 IM – 1:47.29 400 IM – 3:51.25
