Former Disney Channel star Christy Carlson Romano recently revealed that she’s keeping her children away from the entertainment industry.
During an appearance on the September 29 episode of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast, Romano confirmed that she and her husband, Brendan Rooney, aren’t interested in having their daughters Isabella, 9, and Sophia, 7, become child actors. Romano, who was 14 when she began starring in the popular Disney Channel ’00s comedy, Even Stevens, explained that “there’s not enough infrastructure to protect them, even though [her] husband and [she] would be the best stage parents for them.”
“That may be true, but also, it’s a tremendous sacrifice for the parent to choose to essentially have their child have a career and not them, because how are you doing that?” said Romano.
She then shared her belief that “successful child actors” are typically from families with secure, well-established positions in the entertainment industry.
“That’s why I think nepotism rules the day when it comes to having successful child actors. Even though, there’s bumps in the road for them, they have something to fall back on. They have resources and they kind of already have a path paved,” said the 42-year-old actress.
While recording the podcast interview, Romano also suggested it wasn’t necessarily her idea to become a child star. According to the Cadet Kelly actress, she believes having a career in the entertainment industry was “more [her mother’s] dream” than her own.
“But it was her dream for me to be successful. It wasn’t, I think, her dream in her mind for her to be successful ever. I don’t think my mom had enough self-worth in herself. She was very shy,” clarified the Kim Possible actress.

In the Not Skinny But Not Fat interview, Romano noted that she does address her daughters in her upcoming memoir, Once Upon a Trainwreck: The Fall and Rise of a Child Star, which comes out on October 6. She explained that she decided to talk about being a parent in the book because that’s “what makes this different from every other child actor celeb memoir.”
She also said that having children fundamentally changed her.
“Becoming a mom is what caused me to understand my issues with alcohol and get sober. And everything in my life has changed since becoming a mom. So, I’d be remiss to not sort of include them in this book,” explained Romano.
