Kevin Sumlin posted a 95-63 record as a college football coach from 2008-20. He oversaw the Texas A&M Aggies‘ 2013 Cotton Bowl victory over the Oklahoma Sooners. Now, a UFL team is hoping he can recapture his winning ways.
On Wednesday, the Dallas Renegades announced they had hired Sumlin as their nead head coach. The 62-year-old spent the 2025 season away from football entirely following two seasons as the University of Maryland’s associate head coach.

Sumlin began his collegiate head coaching career at Houston in 2008. He helped develop Case Keenum, who became the NCAA’s all-time leading passer throughout his Cougar tenure. Following a 35-17 mark there, he left for Texas A&M. In year one, Sumlin brought Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel to College Station and helped the Aggies to an 11-2 record in their first season in the SEC.
The years that followed weren’t quite as successful for Sumlin; he went 9-5 or 8-5 in each of the next four seasons. He was fired in 2017 after a 7-5 campaign, giving him a 51-26 record during his Texas A&M career. From there, Sumlin went to Arizona and struggled as the Widlcats’ head coach, posting a 9-20 record. He last served as a head coach in 2022, with the UFL’s Houston Gamblers (3-7).
