Red Sox catcher/first baseman Mickey Gasper hit the 10-day injured list a few days ago with a right biceps strain. Rob Bradford of WEEI reports that Gasper actually tore his biceps off a tendon and will have surgery on Friday.
Bradford doesn’t provide a timetable for Gasper’s recovery but it seems fair to conclude his season is done. Before Gasper was even placed on the IL, manager Chad Tracy said that the injury was significant and was “probably going to take him out.”
Gasper’s season was inconsistent but trending up. He got two stretches of significant playing time, with the second of those being far more successful. He started the season in the minors but was recalled in early May. He then hit .243/.305/.308 over 119 plate appearances before getting optioned back to the farm in June. He was recalled again in August and hit 10 home runs in 106 plate appearances to end the season, leading to a .262/.415/.667 line in that sample.
Ideally, Gasper would have carried some of that momentum into the postseason but this biceps injury has erased that possibility. Assuming his 2026 is done, he will be focused on getting healthy for 2027. The Sox project to have Adley Rutschman as their primary catcher and Willson Contreras as the first baseman next year. Gasper could occasionally give those two time off while also getting some playing time in the designated hitter spot, if he’s healthy.
Gasper will finish this season with his service time clock between one and two years. That means he can still be controlled for five full seasons after this one and hasn’t yet qualified for arbitration. He also still has one option season remaining.
