Ongoing fights have families concerned, including one that sent the school into lockdown and a student to the hospital last week.

Rush-Henrietta school board meeting
Rush-Henrietta Central School District leaders are asking families to join the discussion on school safety after the fights.
The Board of Education meeting is happening at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Parker Administration Building. You can attend in-person or livestream the meeting here. The district will also host a Safety Forum at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at the senior high school, which you can livestream here.
Student concerns over fights
Several students at Rush-Henrietta Senior High School have told Mahon that they don’t feel safe at school. Some are also frustrated with the punishments students face when they’re caught fighting.
“We are getting discipline, but the discipline isn’t proper discipline that’s needed because these kids are getting like one day, two days of ISS maybe instead of like real action. So they’re just being seen that if they do something and then they’ll get like a day or two of punishment, they can just go back and do it again with the same punishment,” senior Lucy Mills said.
Students said they do not believe one or two days of suspension is enough to stop the fighting. Parents said they are frustrated with what they see as the normalization of fighting in school.
“Regardless of adults or other people saying ‘fights happen in school’ and so on, fights shouldn’t be happening everyday. Students should be receiving consequences and nobody should be put in a hospital for any reason,” Deana Jackson said.
On Monday, students and parents at Rush Henrietta Senior High School walked out during the final period to protest recent fights in the district and call for change. Many at the walkout said they don’t believe there are enough consequences for students involved in fights, and this isn’t how they want their school represented.
