ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Mayor Malik Evans is highlighting the drop in shootings and other violent crimes in the city.
Gun-related homicides are 68% below the 10-year average, Evans said.
City leaders also pointed to decreases in non-deadly shootings, reckless endangerment and other crimes involving guns. Despite the progress, they said more work is needed to address domestic violence.
“As is often the case, when micro issues like crime and violence in the aggregate improve, specific issues like domestic violence become more apparent and the tragic circumstances of those issues become more pronounced,” Evans said.
Rochester police respond to around 6,000 domestic violence calls each year, which is about 16 calls a day. About 60% of those calls are criminal.
City officials said they remain focused on reducing all forms of violence in Rochester.
ROC Against Gun Violence Coalition
Over the weekend, the ROC Against Gun Violence Coalition announced it is looking for feedback on the usefulness of information such as the demographics of victims and suspects, how shooting numbers in Monroe County compare to state and national figures, trends related to domestic violence, local gun laws and the work of violence interruption groups.
The chairman of the coalition said shootings may be down, but one life taken is too many.
