TROY, N.Y. (WNYT) — A fire over the weekend in Rensselaer County killed three family members and seven dogs.
Dominick Rizzo Jr., Alicia Ruefle and their 11-year-old daughter Abigail all died in the fire. Abigail had died late Monday afternoon at Westchester Medical Center where she had been on life support. Their 13-year-old son, Dominic Rizzo III, survived after escaping through a second-floor window.
How it happened
News10NBC’s Albany affiliate says the fire happened Sunday at around 9:30 p.m. in Troy. Firefighters got to the scene Sunday and saw heavy fire coming from the first floor.
Troy Fire Chief Richard Cellucci told our affiliate firefighters forced their way in through the front door, and were immediately met with a flash of fire. He added that Dominick Jr., Alicia and Abigail were removed from the home with critical injuries within five minutes after the fire call was made.
Family’s love for dogs
Firefighters told our affiliate that 11 dogs were living in the home. They said three were rescued, seven died and one was still missing as of late Tuesday morning.
Neighbors also told them the family loved dogs. Cellucci, the family was breeding huskies in their home, which is why so many dogs were there at the time.
