ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Monroe County Executive Adam Bello is asking for another $14 million for a project to expand Seneca Park Zoo.
In a letter, he asked the County Legislature to increase the project’s bonding authorization from $102.9 million to $116.9 million because of “current market conditions” for construction. The letter comes months after Bello spoke about the zoo expansion plan, which includes a new entrance and a tropics complex for orangutans, lemurs, and other tropical animals.
The letter breaks down the costs in five categories: general construction, plumbing, mechanical. electrical, and site work. The letter is also asking legislators to approve contracts between the county and the companies Pike Construction Services, Crosby-Brownlie, Billitier Electric, and DiPasquale Construction to lead the construction.

County leaders announced revised design plan last year
As News10NBC has covered, leaders had to redesign the expansion plan for Seneca Park Zoo from what was originally proposed in 2023. That’s because only one contractor was interested in building the project, and its bid was over $50 million higher than what the county was prepared to pay.
