We are so back, Blackhawks fans. It’s opening day! The Blackhawks flew to Vegas on Monday and play a game that matters in the standings. Patrick Kane is back in a Blackhawks sweater. Bowen Byram is the new No. 1 defenseman in town. Roman Kantersov is in the lineup. He and Anton Frondell are two of the most exciting rookies in the league this year. Spencer Knight looks to build on a strong first full season in Chicago. There’s a lot to be excited about as we get ready for Game One of 2026-27.
First, some good news: both Landon Slaggert and Dominic Toninato cleared waivers on Monday. Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill said he kinda hoped someone would claim Slaggert because he’s an NHL player, but would be thrilled if he cleared because he believes Slaggert will be a contributor for the Blackhawks at some point this season. They’ll both head to Rockford. More good news: Connor Bedard will travel with the team for part of the trip, but he won’t be joining them on the ice for any practices. Not yet. Tracey Myers at NHL.com wrote a nice profile on Frank Nazar and his drive to get the Blackhawks back into the postseason.“We’re going to be a young group, so working on maturing our game, even though we’re so young and everything, I think that’s a big part,” the 22-year-old center said at the NHL/NHLPA Player Media Tour in Las Vegas earlier this month. “I mean, after all, it’s probably going to be to our advantage, being young. We’re going to be energetic, we’re going to be fast, we’re going to be an in-your-face type of team.
“I think it’s going to be great. I’m really excited to see what happens.”

Here’s what he said (note: Kantserov turned 22 on Sept. 20).After all the hype in Hawks-land last season, Kantserov is ready for the big show. The 21-year-old had 36 goals and 64 points in 63 games while leading the KHL in goals. The 2024 Gagarin Cup champ was downright dangerous every time he hit the ice, and, despite being a smaller forward at 5-foot-9, he’s absolutely fearless. Kantserov will likely slot into Chicago’s top line, and while Anton Frondell might get more hype as a prospect, overall, the fact that Kantserov is a goal-scoring winger and doesn’t have to worry about the two-way responsibilities that Frondell has should unlock some Calder Trophy opportunities.
