Karoline Leavitt is Donald Trump’s favourite “It Girl”. Hired at 27, she was the youngest White House press secretary in history. The President often drooled about her “machine gun lips”. She praised him as “the best boss she ever had” when she quit her post in August this year.
Still only 29, she is moving with the speed of a bullet to burnish her career. Already touted as a future queen of daytime television, with her Maga-blonde hair and sharp repartee, she’s now shopping a “potentially explosive” memoir about life in the West Wing circus, according to Page Six, the gossip column of the New York Post.
Leavitt will have the inside track on Trump’s daytime naps, swollen ankles and bruises on his hands. That would be worth reading. Even more gripping would be an account of the state of his relationship with his wife, Melania, and his aide Natalie Harp, the “human printer” who oversees his social media feed.
However, Leavitt is the mistress of the kiss and don’t tell, a stance she perfected at the White House podium. If she deviates one iota from praising Trump, she risks upending her relationship with her number one admirer. But if she fails to dish out any secrets, her book could sink to the bottom of the remainder pile.
Navigating Trump’s ego and the demands of the market won’t be easy, but if anybody can pull off this delicate dance, it’s Leavitt. One option is to blab about everybody but Trump in her book. She has already identified one safe punching bag – Sir Keir Starmer – in an interview with Fox News presenter Sean Hannity on his podcast, Hang Out, last week.
“We’re sitting around the table, and we’re all enjoying lunch, and we’re in this beautiful place [in the UK], and the President just starts ripping into him for his policies,” she confided.
“‘Your policies here are so stupid, you need to close your borders,’” she claimed Trump told the then-prime minister. “I know your country, I know your people, they hate what you’re doing.’”
Surprisingly, her remark infuriated Greg Kelly, a presenter on cable television’s most slavish pro-Trump network, NewsMax.
“Unbelievable. So now that she’s an Ex press secretary, Karoline (with a K) Leavitt GOSSIPS about PRIVATE meetings the President had with world leaders?” Kelly posted on X. “A BREACH of Trust: The President’s, and the Nation’s. So IMMATURE!!!!”
It was a warning that Maga could easily turn on Leavitt in future. There’s a suspicion in some circles that she was a tad too popular with a White House press corps that can’t stand her boss. The controversial Trump biographer Michael Wolff told me a while back that her role as press secretary was to be “as aggressive and full of bile as any human being can be”. But he added: “She’s very likeable.”

But she pleased him by inviting Maga influencers for the first time into the hallowed press briefing room, where they would fawn over his policies. No doubt she’ll find space to include this in her memoir.
How Leavitt attempted to reconcile the 24/7 nature of her job with Maga’s idealisation of “tradwives” and stay-at-home mothers could make fascinating reading. “I have legitimately done my make-up while nursing my baby, talking on the phone, prepping for my TV hit, all at the same time,” she told Conservateur magazine.
In the same interview, she said Trump was blind to the gender of his staff. ““He doesn’t care if you’re a man or a woman with kids. He just wants the hardest worker and the best person for the job.”
Several Trump aides, including “Ice Maiden” chief of staff Susie Wiles, formed a protective circle around Leavitt, mindful that she was bringing up her son, Niko, two, and was pregnant with her second child, Vivi, now five months old, while catering to the whims of the world’s biggest baby.
The pace proved impossible to sustain. She resigned as press secretary four weeks after returning to the White House in July.
On the face of it, Leavitt doesn’t need to work. Her husband, 61-year-old Nicholas Riccio, is a multimillionaire property developer. But with Trump’s popularity sliding, she is not the only former or current White House staffer seeking to cash in on his presidency before his currency loses value.
In writing a book, she is following a well-trodden path. Stephanie Grisham, a former White House press secretary who worked for Trump and Melania, turned on her bosses after the 6 January riot at the Capital. Her critical account earned her a spot as a regular pundit on CNN. Her successor, Kayleigh McEnany, the author of three books on politics and faith, remained loyal to Trump and is a daytime presenter on Fox News.
Leavitt may be more ambitious than either of them. She was only 25 when she became the youngest Republican to run (unsuccessfully) for Congress in the 2022 midterm elections in her home state of New Hampshire.
Her book could be a marker for her ultimate ambition – to follow her boss into politics, not just television.
