With gas prices through the roof, there’s no better excuse to check out a cool new way to explore the beach—all without having to fuel up at the pump. The national average for a gallon of regular gas is currently about $4.48, more than $1.30 higher than it was a year ago.

Many of the Mokes currently offered by rental companies top out at 25 mph, with low-speed vehicle laws in states like Florida allowing them on roads with posted speed limits of 35 mph or less.
Rules vary by destination, however, while newer Moke America models can reach speeds of up to 45 mph.
Beach hotspots like Sarasota, Florida—home to Siesta Key, frequently ranked among America’s best beaches, where Ride a Moke rents the electric cruisers—Corpus Christi, Texas, an under-hyped Gulf getaway, and ritzy Newport Beach, California, all offer Moke rentals to make a margarita run, score prime beach parking or simply cruise the open road with no destination in sight.
It’s not the destination, it’s the journey, right?
And this retro ride isn’t exactly new, but its American comeback is hard to miss. Moke America reported just 450 vehicles sold by September 2018, a figure that had climbed to more than 1,100 by 2020 and more than 4,000 by 2022. By 2024, company founder Todd Rome said more than 5,000 Moke America vehicles were on the road.
Sarasota, Corpus Christi and Newport Beach were just a sample size.
Today, rental operator WeMoke alone lists 10 destinations around the country, from Miami Beach to Honolulu and the Hamptons.
