Imagine looking out your front door and seeing mounds of garbage, and even dead animals.
This is exactly what disabled Navy veteran Jason Sticha says he has been dealing with in recent years.
While illegal dumping of trash has taken place during that time, he says last week a pile of dead animals were dumped near his home.
This is all happening along the border of unincorporated Blue Island and Robbins.
“You can see the decomposition, and it smells awful,” said Sticha. “For all we know, they could have died of some disease.”
A Cook County Property tax map lists the area on South Sacramento as unincorporated Blue Island. Sticha was not aware of that designation, having moved to the home in 2022.
While one of our videographers was shooting video of the dead animals, a pest control company came and removed them. The mayor of Robbins told us this was done as a courtesy. But as for all the piles of garbage, they are still there.
“I mean, the trash was bad enough, but then you throw dead farm animals into the equation and that’s not a recipe for healthy living,” he said. “I just want someone to take responsibility and fix the issue. I’ve been mad but mostly just sad. It’s disappointing. I really want this area to be thought of positively. I’m from this area. My grandmother has lived in this area for 30 plus years.”
Elitha Brown is Sticha’s landlord’s fiancé. She says they’ve installed cameras but had no luck catching the illegal dumper or dumpers in action.
“We don’t know what type of stuff they are dumping over here,” said Brown. “I can tell you they were dumping demolished housing and all kind of material. And then when we complained about it, it was like we were ignored.”
NBC 5 has reached out to the Illinois EPA for comment and is still awaiting a response.
In a statement, Blue Island told NBC 5 police did respond to a report of illegal dumping at the location in February 2026, but said they had not received a more recent complaint.
The statement goes on to say dumping of refuse is punishable by a fine of up to $750 per incident.
“Please just clean it up and please let us help each other out on this,” Sticha said. “This is going to take a huge effort, and why can’t we all pitch in together and help each other? I don’t make a lot of money. I get by on what I can. I have a fixed income, my disability pay, and I just I just want to live healthy, and I want to be happy.”
