HENRIETTA, N.Y. — Students and parents at Rush Henrietta Senior High School walked out during the final period Monday to protest recent fights in the district and call for change.

“We want actual change. The students want to feel safe in their schools. They want to feel okay going into school. They don’t want to have fear going in,” Ishana, a 10th grader, said.
Students weigh in
Many at the walkout told News10NBC’s Erin Mahon they don’t believe there are enough consequences for students involved in fights and this isn’t how they want their school represented.
Lucy Mills, a senior, said, “I know this is like, this is very stereotypical. Like harsher punishments. Maybe because they’re not really getting punishment and maybe, like, having a real punishment will actually maybe discourage them.”
Shabbar Zaidi, another senior, said, “We’re getting these temporary solutions like one-day suspensions. I think Lucy talked about it but one day suspensions, one week suspensions. But there’s no actual iron fist getting put down that we need.”
Parents share concerns
Parents who joined the students on the school’s front lawn shared their concerns about the impact of violence on their children.
“I think it’s pretty sad that most of these children are desensitized to the type of violence that they see in school, and in social media and all of those things. So I wanted to make sure that she has an understanding that this isn’t normal,” Deana Jackson, parent of a 10th grader, said.
Mills also spoke about how the school is portrayed. “I just want people to know that that is not who we are. Like, that’s not who any of these kids are. They’re not fighting people because they want to settle something. They’re not like this. And I wish that that’s not how we were represented in the media,” Mills said.
Erin reached out to the district Monday asking to speak with someone on camera. The district said the superintendent will have availability Tuesday. Last week, the district responded to the walkout by saying it will always support students making themselves heard.
The district is hosting a community forum on the issue Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the senior high school cafeteria.
