Orioles righty Kyle Bradish will undergo hernia surgery tomorrow, president of baseball operations Mike Elias announced at his end-of-season press conference (via Jacob Calvin Meyer of the Baltimore Sun). Bradish was dealing with a hernia over his final three starts of the season. The Orioles placed Bradish on the 15-day IL due to abdominal discomfort in mid-September. He was already known to be dealing with a hernia and said at the time of his IL placement that he was mulling surgery as one potential course of action.
Those final three starts of the season didn’t go especially well. The 30-year-old righty tossed 12 innings and allowed 10 runs (seven earned) on 16 hits and eight walks with nine strikeouts. By and large, the 2026 season was still a success for Bradish. In his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, the right-hander logged 29 starts and pitched 155 innings — both the second-highest marks of his career and his most since a career-high 30 start/168 2/3-inning-season in 2023.
Bradish also pitched well enough and proved himself healthy enough for the club to invest in him long term. He won an arbitration hearing against the Orioles last winter, which resulted in a $3.55MM salary in arbitration, but that hearing didn’t sour the relationship between player and team. Just five months after that hearing, the O’s signed Bradish to a five-year, $90MM contract that’ll cover the 2027-31 seasons. That deal buys out Bradish’s two final arbitration seasons and locks him in for what would’ve been three free-agent years.
Hernia surgery shouldn’t impact Bradish’s readiness for the 2027 season. Barring unforeseeable setbacks, he should step right back into a starting staff that includes Shane Baz (who also signed a five-year extension this season) and breakout righty Brandon Young. Prospects Trey Gibson and Luis De Leon will get another opportunity, and former top prospect Cade Povich could still factor into the mix, too.
The O’s will see Trevor Rogers, Chris Bassitt and Zach Eflin all become free agents this winter. Rogers is a slam-dunk qualifying offer recipient who’ll surely reject in favor of a multi-year deal in free agency. Elias didn’t make any definitive statements on what’s next other than to state that he plans to touch base with Rogers’ agents at PSI Sports Management before Rogers formally reaches the open market five days after the World Series concludes (via MASNsports.com’s Roch Kubatko).
Though Eflin only made one start this season before undergoing UCL surgery, he still entered the season locked into a rotation spot. His departure, coupled with potential departures for Rogers and Bassitt, removes three veteran arms on whom the Orioles were relying heavily to begin the season. Young’s breakout and the acquisition of Double-A right-hander Anthony Eyanson and High-A righty Kyson Witherspoon in the Adley Rutschman blockbuster have given the Orioles some more in-house depth, but it still seems quite likely that Elias and his staff will be looking to upgrade and deepen the rotation in the offseason.
