ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Buffalo Bills players say there’s a lot to learn from after beating the Los Angeles Chargers 24-16, despite having five turnovers. The Bills didn’t take the lead until the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game at Highmark Stadium. However, the team remains undefeated, 3-0.
DRIVE-BY-DRIVE RECAP: Bills shake off five turnovers for 24-16 win over Los Angeles Chargers
The Bills credited some major defensive stops and an interception from their safety, C. J. Gardner-Johnson, in the fourth quarter as the major turning points in the game. Josh Allen says he’s glad for the win, but says “smoke detectors” are going off with some of the challenges the team encountered.
“You’re not going to win very many games from a hole that much. Overall, we win, but a lot of smoke detectors are going off right now. We got to clean a lot of stuff up,” he said.
The Bills’ first two games this season were back-to-back offensive masterpieces, scoring a total of 77 points. The team beat the Texans 36-31 at Houston and beat the Detroit Lions in the first game at the new Highmark Stadium. Bills Head Coach Joe Brady says he wants the Bills to reflect on what made this game different.
“Look, I don’t want our guys to walk in tomorrow feeling like we lost a football game. I hope they’re pissed off, right?” he said. “Like, you know, we didn’t play our best, and there’s a standard, but we found a way to win, and they earned it. And I’m never going to apologize for that, but there’s a lot for us to clean up.”
Despite the setbacks, there were some bright spots in the Bills win. The Bills offense scored back-to-back times in the fourth quarter. Also, despite having a fumble early in the game, James Cook ran for over 100 yards for the second straight week.
“You know, we got the job done and got the W,” Cook said.
Next, the Bills will play their first divisional game at home, against the New England Patriots. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4. Currently, the Bills are the only team with a winning record in the AFC East. The Patriots and the New York Jets are 1-2. The Miami Dolphins are 0-3.
