From 2000 to 2007, the series Gilmore Girls followed the lives of super close mom-daughter duo Lorelai and Rory Gilmore (Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel) and their friends in Stars Hollow, Connecticut. In a new interview with People magazine, Graham, 59, revealed that while she was “always so amazed by the scripts,” Lorelai and Rory’s months-long estrangement did not resonate with fans, which began at the end of Season 5 in 2005 and continued well into Season 6. The feud lasted a shocking 10 episodes in which the two didn’t speak to one another.
“There was that season when Rory and Lorelai were in a fight, and I would hear from people, ‘We don’t like that. It’s going on for so long,’” Graham shared. “But when you do a long-running TV show, you have to have conflict. It can’t all be walking around the gazebo. We got to have some drama.”
The feud took place when Rory dropped out of Yale and moved in with her wealthy grandparents (Kelly Bishop, Edward Herrmann) behind her mother’s back.
Graham previously spoke about the story arc during an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast.
“There’s a year when Alexis and I — Rory and Lorelai — are in a fight for a long time, and we would talk about it, [to show creator] Amy [Sherman-Palladino],” she shared. “I forget even what the conflict was, but it went on for a while, and that’s the one that I would hear from people that they didn’t like it.”
Decades later, fans still talk about the Gilmore Girls feud on social media.
“I hate when Rory and Lorelai stop talking in season 6,” one fan wrote in a Facebook group. “It makes me so irritated that they are so childish about the situation. Yes, Rory shouldn’t have left Yale and let her life fall apart …but I also get Lorelai not wanting Rory to let everything slip away after what they went through to get her there. Rory needs to grow up and realize her mom just wants the best for her!”
“I hated all of it,” another wrote on Reddit. “I hated how Rory was acting, I hated that Lorelai let her flounder although I’m not sure Rory would have accepted help, I hated how it always felt like their relationship was different after that.”
Despite the fan complaints about the feud plotline, Gilmore Girls remains a beloved series two decades later, with fan rewatches still an annual fall tradition.
Bledel, now 45, told The New York Times she is “grateful” for the loyalty from fans.
“I appreciate fans sticking with us as we evolved and grew within our roles,” the Gilmore Girls star said. “Teen angst is also timeless. Single mom life, romantic scenes, multigenerational family drama. I think that’s what keeps people coming back.”
