Charles Leclerc left Baku with a result that flattered Ferrari’s pace – and a warning that the Scuderia cannot afford to ignore.
The Monegasque salvaged fourth place in Saturday’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix, but only after Oscar Piastri threw away a podium with a late lock-up and Kimi Antonelli’s qualifying crash had forced the Mercedes driver to fight his way through the field.
For Leclerc, there was little reason to disguise the bigger problem. Ferrari’s SF-26 simply lacked the pace to stay with the front-runners, while Red Bull and McLaren appeared to have extracted considerably more from their latest development work.
“It was a bit of a boring race for us,” Leclerc said. “Unfortunately, we had a bad start, which was probably the only thing we could have done much better today.
“After that, we just had no pace. Compared to the Red Bull, it was very difficult to defend because in the straight line we are too slow.
“We are just struggling with raw pace at the moment.”
The deficit was particularly stark in comparison with Red Bull. Max Verstappen had started eighth after a qualifying session in which Red Bull appeared nowhere near Mercedes, yet the Dutchman spent much of the race applying pressure to George Russell and eventually finished less than two tenths behind the winner.
Isack Hadjar’s return from injury was even more striking. The Red Bull driver qualified third and converted it into a podium, leaving Leclerc to acknowledge that Ferrari currently has plenty of catching up to do.
“The two Red Bulls were too quick and obviously George [Russell] was too strong as well,” Leclerc added.
Rivals have moved forward, Ferrari hasn’t
The difference, Leclerc believes, cannot simply be dismissed as a consequence of Baku’s unique characteristics.
Red Bull and McLaren arrived in Azerbaijan with substantial packages aimed at extracting more performance from their respective cars.
Ferrari, by contrast, brought no comparable upgrade to the SF-26, and Leclerc believes that development disparity was exposed over the course of the weekend.
“McLaren and Red Bull did a step forward with the upgrades they are bringing,” he said.
“They have grown recently, they did a step forward that we didn't do. And we must react, because losing some pace now is going to be very difficult to take it back. So hopefully we can react very soon.”
That leaves Ferrari facing a familiar but increasingly urgent development equation.

Leclerc confirmed that Ferrari does have developments in the pipeline, although he was careful not to suggest that they will automatically erase the deficit.
“Whether it's going to be enough to close the gap, not knowing what the others have in store as well is another matter,” he added. “But surely, we've got a few things that should help us do some steps forward.”
Hamilton refuses to join the debate
Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, was considerably less interested in dissecting Ferrari’s position relative to its rivals.
Asked whether the Scuderia now had the fourth-fastest car, the seven-time world champion responded bluntly: “What’s the importance of that?”
And when pressed on whether Red Bull’s sudden pace had surprised him, given Verstappen’s charge towards Russell after starting eighth, Hamilton remained equally detached.
“I don't really think about anybody else,” he said.
Leclerc’s assessment, however, was rather more revealing. Ferrari may have escaped Baku with fourth place, but the result masked a car that struggled to match the development curve of its closest rivals.
The message from the Monegasque is therefore straightforward: Ferrari has work to do, and the longer it allows Red Bull and McLaren to keep moving forward while the SF-26 stands still, the harder that lost ground will be to recover.
