The Counseling Center at The University of Alabama is now offering its services in Spanish. The Center helps students “thrive emotionally, academically, and personally,” supporting them through challenges and developing skills to succeed.
The Center serves as a hub for students to talk through challenges, manage stress or speak to someone confidentially. With professional counselors, students can access a variety of services within the center. Students now have the option to schedule sessions with Spanish-speaking counselors.
“I see this as a great resource to utilize as a student for those who don’t feel too comfortable or don’t feel like their first generation kind of needs will be met with a regular counselor that can empathize with them in those kinds of issues,” said Brianna Morales-Nino, a freshman majoring in criminal justice and Spanish.
“Screening and evaluation” is essentially a student’s first appointment with the Counseling Center. During the appointment, students complete paperwork and meet with a therapist to evaluate their needs and connect them to the appropriate resources. It is within this process that students may request for a Spanish-speaking provider or counselor during their screening to connect them with the counselors.
In addition, the center offers individual counseling, couples counseling and group counseling. With Spanish-speaking counselors now on staff, the option for individual and couples counseling in Spanish is also available.
Carlos Quintana, a psychology intern at the Counseling Center, said they are working on creating a “Hispanic Latino Experience” therapy group.
“It’s going to be directly for Hispanic students,” Quintana said. “A space we’re going to be able to build community and basically go through the therapeutic processes that some Hispanic-Latino people face throughout their daily life, talking about culture, discrimination and stigma.”
Quintana said creating a culturally grounded space highlights the core purpose of the new service: giving Hispanic and Latino students community and Spanish counseling.
Daniela Trabal, a postdoctoral fellow in psychology at the Counseling Center, said she sees the opportunity to support Latino students as a deeply personal extension of her work.
“I think it really completes the mission for me to be able to offer these services to any student, but to know that I can be that person for a Latin student that’s really an honor,” Trabal said.
The Counseling Center’s services provide another resource for Latino students at the University who might be seeking support. The Hispanic Latino Experience group will allow students an opportunity to connect with others within the Latino community who could share their cultural background.
“I think what this Hispanic council and counselor are doing to kind of create that support group for Hispanic people is just great. It’s something that I just didn’t expect to see here, and I love that it is here,” Morales-Nino said.
