Over time, our skin naturally becomes drier and produces less oil. Per Monet, this can affect how fragrance performs.
“Perfume tends to hold onto moisturized skin better, so someone with drier skin may notice that certain fragrances don’t last as long or project as strongly as they once did. That said, everyone’s skin chemistry is different, and age is only one factor. Your skincare routine, environment and even the fragrance itself can affect performance,” she says.
For this reason, the perfume pro suggests testing fragrance on your skin before buying it.
“A blotter can tell you whether you like a perfume, but your skin tells you how that perfume is actually going to wear on you,” she explains.

What Fragrance Notes, Families and Concentrations Work Best on Mature Skin?
Certain skincare formulations work better on your skin depending on your age, but Monet says fragrance notes, families and concentrations are a lot more versatile.
“You don’t age out of fragrance families. If you love sweet gourmands, juicy fruits or sexy florals, there is absolutely no birthday where you suddenly have to start wearing powdery rose perfume. If longevity is the goal, richer notes like woods, amber, vanilla, resins, musk and patchouli tend to have more staying power than very light citrus or airy compositions,” she explains.
Monet notes that eau de parfums, parfums and extraits can offer “more longevity,” but says concentration isn’t everything.
“The construction of the fragrance matters too. My advice is always to start with what you actually enjoy wearing and then find a fragrance within that category that gives you the performance you’re looking for,” she tells Parade.

How To Apply Perfume for Maximum Longevity and Diffusion After 60
After many years of working at a fragrance counter and developing her own fragrance brand, Monet has developed a few pro tricks for applying perfume for maximum longevity and diffusion:
Moisturize first: “Fragrance loves hydrated skin, so applying an unscented lotion or body cream before your perfume can help it last longer. If you want to take it a step further, layer with a body product that complements your fragrance,” she says. Spray in multiple areas: “I spray my neck, behind my shoulders and other pulse points to create more of a scent bubble. And please don’t rub your wrists together! Just spray and let the fragrance dry naturally,” she says. Spray your clothes: “Fabric often holds fragrance longer than skin, so I’ll lightly mist my clothing when I want my perfume to stay with me throughout the day.
