Penned by The Zombies’ keyboard player Rod Argent, the song was written shortly before the band was scheduled to finish recording the album in 1967 at the iconic Abbey Road Studios in London, where The Beatles also recorded albums like Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, The White Album and Abbey Road.
“It was written in the morning before we went into the studio in the afternoon, and I kind of struggled on the melody,” The Zombies frontman Colin Blunstone told Songfacts. “Rod and I had quite a heated discussion – he being in the control room and me singing the song – and we were just doing it through my headphones. Because it had only just been written, I was struggling with the melody, and he’d be saying, ‘You know that’s not quite right, Colin. Can you do it again?’”
In addition, Blunstone said that he felt a sense of “relief” after the song was included on their studio album.
“We were up against the clock,” he told American Songwriter. “It was the last song we recorded for Odessey and Oracle and we had a minute budget and we were running out of money. I think we finished it with like seconds to go before the budget ran out.”
As for Argent, he felt a sense of excitement upon hearing the song for the first time.
“Also when you hear something for the first time,” he said, adding, “it’s a fantastic feeling and we still feel that way today.”
However, by the time their song “Time of the Season” became popular, The Zombies had already broken up.
The group did not reunite to capitalize on the song’s success when “Time of the Season” became a hit in 1969.
The song became a surprise hit, eventually peaking at No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 that year.
