During the ’90s, Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder reportedly came across an old copy of Wilson’s recording at an antique store. He brought the song to the band and they recorded a version of “Last Kiss” during a soundcheck in Washington, D.C., in 1998—but no one was expecting what happened next.
Pearl Jam originally released “Last Kiss” as a Christmas single for members of its official fan club, so it was clear that the band wasn’t initially trying to create another mainstream hit. But once radio stations began playing their recording, the song’s popularity skyrocketed, and the unexpectedly eventually led to its commercial release.
In 1999, Pearl Jam’s version reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming their highest-charting single and matching the peak reached by Wilson and the Cavaliers more than 30 years earlier.
