ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester is seeing some of the lowest shooting numbers in years, but city leaders and advocates say more work is needed.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow attended a City Council meeting at the Arnett Branch Library where members discussed possible solutions and gathered community input on the ROC Against Gun Violence Coalition’s new community-driven data hub.
The coalition is looking for feedback on the usefulness of information such as the demographics of victims and suspects, how shooting numbers in Monroe County compare to state and national figures, trends related to domestic violence, local gun laws and the work of violence interruption groups.
“We have like the RPD open data portal, but there’s a lot of data points that are missing from that portal. So we want to build a community facing data hub, that allows us to tell the story, more, intricately of what’s happening around violence and gun violence in the city of Rochester and Monroe County also,” Willie Lightfoot said.
Lightfoot, chairman of the ROC Against Gun Violence Coalition, said shootings may be down but one life taken is too many. He said the coalition is working to eradicate shooting crimes in Rochester.
