“While my goal was to cast people that felt like they were ordinary people, you still are casting attractive people,” he said with a laugh. “Yes, they might be a little better looking than you or me, but I was going for that relatability of the everyman quality. For instance, everybody knows a guy like Greg Grunberg. Even with Hayden Panettiere, I described her as the cheerleader who you had the crush on, not the one that everybody else had the crush on. So not the golden girl, but slightly quirky, with something offbeat about her.”
When speaking about casting Panettiere, he said, “We did not look very far; we saw her, and that was it. First of all, she was an extraordinary actress. She just embodied that girl-next-door quality, and then her range was exceptional. So it was just pure talent that walked in the door. There’s nobody in my head that we saw other than her. For some of the other parts, I can remember other actors from casting, but no, she was it.”

He also discussed the famous tagline for the show, “Save the cheerleader, save the world,” which referred to Panettiere’s character. When speaking about how the line was created, he said, “It came up in the writers’ room. As we were mapping out the board, we were saying, ‘Well, this part here is connected, and this part here is connected, and the whole idea is, if we save the cheerleader, we save the world.’ We were all like, ‘Oh, that’s pretty cool. Save the cheerleader, save the world, let’s definitely put a line of dialogue in Hiro Nakamura’s (Masi Oka) mouth.’ And then it ended up becoming a tool for the network to market the show. It was one of those happy accidents where one line of dialogue distills down to the essence of what the story was all about.”
Panettiere died on August 16 of this year. She was 36.
