Parton called McEntire toward the end of July, but McEntire was in a meeting and missed the call. She tried to get back in touch, but the two never connected again before Parton’s death at age 80 on Aug. 25.
“And then when my buddy called me and said, ‘Dolly’s gone,’ I thought, ‘I’ll never know why she called me,'” McEntire told Entertainment Tonight. With a somber smile, she added, “I’ll find out one day.”
McEntire had already shared an emotional tribute to Parton following her death, thanking her for “all the wonderful things you did for us here on earth” and saying she would “always love” her.
