ROCHESTER, N.Y. — An $100,000 investment will be going to two counties in the Finger Lakes to expand childhood lead testing.
The funding comes from a settlement with Dollar Tree over the sale of recalled, lead-contaminated children’s food. The money will support an 18-month project led by Pivital Public Health Partnership to increase blood lead screening among one- and two-year-old children in Yates and Seneca counties.
The State Attorney General’s Office says in 2025, just 41% of one-year-olds and 42.7% of two-year-old’s in Yates County received blood lead testing. Testing rates in Seneca County were 49.5% and 49.%, respectively.
New York law requires health care providers to screen or refer every child for blood lead testing around ages one and two.
Pivital Public Health Partnership, a nonprofit affiliation of seven county public health departments in the Finger Lakes region, will use the $100,000 to address these disparities. The organization will hold small-group listening and education sessions with caregivers in trusted community settings and offer grocery voucher incentives to families who complete their child’s blood lead test.
The project will identify barriers to testing and evaluate which strategies are most effective at increasing testing rates. If successful, the model could be shared with other rural communities in the Finger Lakes and across New York.
