ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls honored 11 women on Thursday night during its induction ceremony.
The ceremony took place at Dryden Theatre within the George Eastman Museum. Since 1973, the hall of fame has sought to honor women whose achievements have shaped the world and to illuminate their stories. Here are this year’s recipients:
Virginia Hall Goillot, one of World War II’s most remarkable heroines. Edith Louise Starrett Green, who transformed American education and expanded opportunities for women. Harriet Jacobs, one of the most important writers of the antebellum African American and American women’s literary tradition. Dr. Georgeanna Emory Seegar Jones, who shaped an entire field of medicine. Audre Lorde, a poet, essayist, and activist whose work gave voice to the realities of race, gender, sexuality, and power. Adele Smith Simmons, who spent her career building bridges between sectors, across borders, and toward a more sustainable and equitable world. S. Mona Sinha, who has built her career at the intersection of law, equity, and global change. Marie Tharp, who published the first complete world map of the ocean floors. Judith Viorst, who has spent a lifetime capturing the humor, heartache, and hard-won wisdom of everyday life. Janet Yellen, who has spent her career shaping the economic course of the U.S. and the world. She served as U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, Chair of the Federal Reserve, and Chair of the White House Council of Economic Advisers—the only person to lead all three.The National Women’s Hall of Fame received over 400 nominations.
