ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Prep High School on Mark Street is holding a blood drive on Friday in memory of a 2020 graduate who died from complications related to sickle cell disease.
This marks the 5th annual blood drive in memory of Samaya Cameron, who died at age 19. Rochester Prep leaders say she was a standout student with remarkable kindness, determination, and resilience, along with an outstanding track and field athlete.
The blood drive runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It’s open to all students, staff, families, and community members. Last year’s blood drive collected 52 units and over 40% of students participated. Out of those who donated, 43% were first-time donors.
School leaders say the event helps to raise awareness in the community about sickle cell disease, a blood disorder that changes round, flexible red blood cells into stiff, sickle-shaped cells. Sickle cell disease impacts about 100,000 people in the U.S., and more than 90% are African American, according to the CDC.
In addition to collecting blood donations, the event partners with Roc City Sickle Warriors, a local advocacy group.
