ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The 15th annual Rochester Fringe Festival closes out on Saturday, and a local musician is among the highly anticipated acts.
Thomas Warfield will be one of the final acts at the Spiegeltent at the corner of Main and Gibbs streets on Saturday. The show starts at 4:45 p.m., and you can get tickets here.
Warfield has performed at the Fringe Festival since its first year and said the event has become part of his DNA. He described the festival as a wonderful exchange of ideas, creativity and fun that closes out the summer festival season.
“It’s such gratitude that they’ve asked me to come to the Spiegeltent and bring my show, and I’m just overjoyed and grateful,” Warfield said.
His show features songs that have personal meaning to him, including works by Bob Dylan, Kander and Ebb, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Billie Holiday. Warfield said he hopes the songs that touch him will also resonate with the audience.
“Music is such an emotional language, and we all speak it,” Warfield said. “And to be able to be collectively in a room with people experiencing the same thing, feeling the same thing, it’s just there’s nothing like it.”
Warfield said he is more excited about people coming in and experiencing the show with him than about his own performance. He described the experience as creating something together with the audience, like it’s the first time.
“Music, sort of activates us in so many ways,” Warfield said. “You know, when they scan the brain during somebody’s listening to music, it’s like everything is activated at the same time.”
He said music touches people more fully than anything else in their lives, activating motor skills, sensory skills, and everything at once.
“Music sort of activates us in so many ways. You know, when they scan the brain during somebody’s listening to music, it’s like everything is activated at the same time. The motor skills, the sensory skills, everything is just going at once. And I don’t think there’s anything like that in our lives that touches us so fully as music,” Warfield said.
While some of this year’s Fringe Festival acts come from around the country and around the World, organizers say about 75% of the acts are from the greater Rochester region.
