FARRELL, Pa. — Offense, defense and special teams each had their share of plays Thursday for the Ursuline football team.
The Fighting Irish got contributions in all three phases to beat Farrell 24-13 at Pegues Sports Complex in Farrell. With the win, the Irish have won their last three games.
“We all contributed. We always say ‘one-eleventh,’ that’s what it takes,” Ursuline head coach Tony Stephens said. “Everybody played for one another, and we pulled it out.”
Antonio Ricchiuti gave the Fighting Irish (4-2) an early 3-0 lead with a field goal.
After both teams exchanged the ball, the Steelers got a reception from Dorean Cain, who weaved his way through the Ursuline defense to the 13 for a 52-yard catch-and-run. But the Irish got the third-down stop, and Nick Ellsworth missed a 33-yard field goal.
The Steelers fumbled on a punt, and the Irish recovered to get another shot just before the first quarter ended. Vinnie Fecko found the end zone from 23 yards out when he took the ball off the right side and broke a tackle for the first touchdown. After the extra point, the Irish led 10-0 with 10:28 left in the half.
Farrell had another shot at getting points after the ensuing kick return put the ball at the Ursuline 35. But Dale Peterman Jr. batted away a fourth-down pass at the goal line to give the Irish the ball at their 31.
However, the Irish went backward on the first two plays of the next drive, and Patrick Reardon was intercepted at the Ursuline 39. The Steelers got on the board when Aaron Pegues ran it in from 2 yards out, making it a 10-7 game with 3:12 left in the second quarter.
Following a 30-yard return by Cain to start the second half, the Steelers got the ball at the 50-yard line. Pegues’ legs got Farrell inside the Irish red zone, but another fourth-down stop led to a turnover on downs at the Ursuline 19.
Back-to-back issues handling the ball led to Irish fumbles, and the visitors were backed up to their 5. The Steelers took over in Irish territory after a punt.
Yet again, the Steelers got into the red zone. And with two cracks at a first down after a defensive pass interference, the Irish again forced a turnover on downs.
Then, the Ursuline run game took over.
Ursuline went 84 yards on the ground, working the clock along the way. Fecko scored his second TD of the night on a 28-yard carry down the left sideline to extend the Irish lead to 17-7 with 11:38 to play.
“(The offensive line) came alive,” Stephens said. “They started moving that ball, moving that (defensive) line and started getting the holes. We just started running right at ‘em.”
On Farrell’s next drive, Pegues layered a couple passes over the outstretched hands of Irish defenders. The second went to Cain, who scored with 9:39 to play and cut the lead to 17-13 after the point-after was blocked.
Urusline was driving when a fumble was recovered by Farrell at the Steelers’ 11. But the Steelers were forced to punt.
Fecko put the game away with a 16-yard touchdown run, putting the Irish up 24-13 with 43 seconds left.
Ursuline squibbed the ensuing kickoff, and after it hit a Farrell upman, the Irish recovered to close out the win.
Ursuline found its groove in the last three weeks. The Irish earned wins over Youngstown, Warren G. Harding and Farrell on the road.
“We’ve been that team that when we feel pressure, we don’t blink. We just answer,” Stephens said. “We made our adjustments. (Farrell) is an awesome team. They’re 4-0 for a reason. I told these guys that we can’t come down here and take them lightly. They’re a (Class) 1A school, but they’re a tough 1A school. We had to give them everything just to pull this off.”
