UNC’s fall sports student-athletes have their seasons in full swing and many winter sports athletes are busy with practice and preparation before their seasons begin. But many of Carolina’s programs took time out of their schedules on Wednesday for a special cause: the Montross Day of Service.
To honor the birthday of the late UNC men’s basketball star and radio color commentator Eric Montross — who died in 2023 — The Rams Club issued a call to action for Carolina fans to volunteer or make an act of service. The tradition, which started in 2024, is a way to remember Montross while making a difference in their respective communities.
The result in Chapel Hill on Wednesday was several local organizations and groups benefitting from Tar Heel student-athletes’ and coaches’ time. Patients at the UNC Children’s Hospital on campus got a visit from men’s basketball players, a Make-A-Wish kid spent time with the women’s basketball program. Morris Grove Elementary School hosted the women’s golf team, the Ronald McDonald House of Chapel Hill hosted the wrestling team, while nonprofits like the Be Loud! Sophie Foundation and the Inter-Faith Council received care packages from gymnastics and women’s soccer athletes. And several organizations used the Kenan Football Center and help from UNC football players to advance their impact or outreach.

During his playing days, Montross was beloved by Tar Heel fans. A 7-foot center from Indianapolis, he was named a McDonald’s All-American in high school before arriving in Chapel Hill in 1990 to play for head coach Dean Smith. Montross’ teams reached two Final Fours in his four seasons, winning the 1993 national title over Michigan in a game where the center scored 16 points. He was named first team All-ACC and second team All-America as a junior, earned first team Academic All-America status as a senior, and was selected ninth overall in the 1994 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics.
After playing eight seasons in the NBA, he joined the radio broadcasting crew for the Tar Heel Sports Network as the main color commentator for UNC men’s basketball. He worked in the role for 18 years as well as served as the senior major gifts director for the Rams Club. He died at 52 years old after a battle with cancer.
