The Braves gave lefty Chris Sale a dozen days between starts to prep him for the playoffs. His final start of the regular season made it seem like he’s ready for postseason baseball. Sale allowed one earned run over 5 2/3 innings against the Reds, striking out 10 and walking none. The final strikeout of the night gave him exactly 200 for the season. It’s Sale’s ninth season of 200+ strikeouts. He’ll likely get the ball for Game 1 of the Wild Card round next week. “I told myself before this game that I really wanted to kind of go into this making it feel like a playoff game,” Sale said (h/t Mark Bowman of MLB.com). “I wanted to get locked in and try to put my best foot forward there.”
3. Padres jump atop NL Wild Card standings
The Padres dispatched the Dodgers behind 5 2/3 scoreless innings from their dominant bullpen on Wednesday. The win, along with losses by the Cubs and Phillies, moved San Diego to the top NL Wild Card spot. The Padres’ magic number is down to one. Third baseman Manny Machado got the scoring started with a two-run homer off Yoshinobu Yamamoto in the fourth inning. San Diego would tack on two more in the fifth inning. The Padres and Dodgers will wrap up their series tonight, and then San Diego will host Arizona for the final three games of the regular season. The Diamondbacks are the lone team still alive in the NL Wild Card race, currently three games back of the last spot.
