After delivering a jaw-dropping performance on the 4×200 free relay for China, which saw him split the fastest 4×200 free relay split in history in 1:42.92, Zhang Zhanshuo would back that performance up in a major way in the finals of the individual 200 freestyle, surging to a new Asian Record in 1:43.92 and taking gold in the process.
Zhang, 19, is now the 5th-fastest performer in the event’s history, four spots ahead of former Asian Record holder and Asian Games runner-up Hwang Sunwoo of Korea.

That time also slashes almost a half second off the Asian Record, now putting the record in some unfamiliar territory for its continental athletes.
Zhang split 24.37/26.41/26.75/25.96; that final split of 25.96 is only one hundredth of a second slower than when he anchored the 4×200 free relay on day 2, which helped deliver a stunning comeback over Japan and Tomoyuki Matsushita.
Hwang’s former continental mark of 1:43.92 still ranks him inside the top 10 all-time, though he narrowly escaped the 200 free here with a silver in 1:44.62, as Tatsuya Murasa stopped the clock less than two tenths of a second behind for bronze in 1:44.81.
Zhang is clearly at his peak right now, having also set a lifetime best in the 1500 free the day before. Zhang still has a few races left to swim in Tokyo, but he has continued to climb the world rankings as a serious podium threat in several events heading into the back half of the Olympic quad.
