Lucy Hale rose to fame with her role in Pretty Little Liars in the late 2000s, but she reveals that her acting and music careers took a toll as her drinking worsened ahead of her Grand Ole Opry debut.
The actor began her career in the early 2000s and became better known for her role as Aria Montgomery in Freeform’s teen drama mystery series, Pretty Little Liars. As she rose to fame with the series, her singing career was also taking off.
During Monday’s episode of the On Purpose podcast, Hale opens up about her turbulent struggle with alcohol abuse that began at a young age and worsened when she was in her early 20s. Looking back, she admits there were “crystal clear” signs that she was abusing alcohol and doesn’t “remember ever having a normal drinking experience.” The actor explains that the way alcohol was presented in her hometown, among friends, and among millennials contributed.
“I always wanted more… I could never get enough of the feeling of just being so at ease. I remember just after a drink, it felt like my costume was coming off and Lucy could finally emerge, and I could be free, and I could be sexy, and I could be funny,” said Hale.
She soon explains how missing out on her Grand Ole Opry debut and a “very distinct shift” one day led her to realize she needed help. In her early 20s, she was dating someone who also struggled with alcohol, and how drinking was still seen as “fun” and eased her anxieties.
“I would say there was a dark turn around like 23, where I was drinking to the point where I would black out,” she admitted.
While Pretty Little Liars was a success for seven seasons, Hale was also making a name for herself as a singer. When she released her debut album, Road Between, in 2014, she was invited to perform on country music’s biggest stage, the Grand Ole Opry. While it was the opportunity of a lifetime, Hale was at the “point where I was just drinking dangerous amounts, waking up in dangerous situations.”
“I woke up out of a blackout in a hotel room, and later — it was early in the morning — and later that day, I was going to sing at the Grand Ole Opry… I went to rehab instead,” she said. “That morning, I called my manager and I said, ‘I’m really scared. I don’t want to stop drinking, but I know I have to stop drinking.’”
Hale and her manager kept her rehab away from the public, and it resulted in her cancelling her tour. They publicly announced to media outlets that she was battling flu symptoms. The actor admits that it’s still emotional and hard to look back at photos from that time, and hard for her to consider going back to music, as it “coincided with my issues.”
The actor still got her shot on stage when she made her official Grand Ole Opry performance in June 2014. She debuted her track “Lie a Little Better” and sang with Jeannie Seely.
