Pasta sold nationwide at Walmart stores is being recalled over possible listeria contamination, according to a recent announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Bettergoods Authentic Italian Lemon Alfredo Fettuccine was recalled after “routine sampling” in two states found the finished product may contain listeria monocytogenes, “an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”
Details on what led to the contamination have not yet been discovered, according to the recall alert, but no illnesses have been reported so far.
The recalled items, from New York-based Glas Foods, are frozen and packaged in a 22 oz. yellow plastic container with UPC# 194346442706. They are marked with lot # L6079C or # L6080C with an expiration date of 09/19/2027 or 09/20/2027 both stamped on the back of packaging.
Those who may have purchased the items are being urged to return them for a full refunds.
What is listeria?
According to the FDA, Listeria monocytogenes “is a type of disease-causing bacteria that can be found in many places, including soil, water, sewage, rotting vegetation, and animals.”
“It can survive and grow even under refrigeration,” the FDA’s website read. “L. monocytogenes can thrive in unsanitary food production conditions, leading to contamination of the food. When people eat food contaminated with L. monocytogenes, they may develop a disease called listeriosis.”
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms for listerosis can vary based on the severity and form of the illness, as well as the condition of the person contracting it.
According to the CDC, there are two forms of the disease. One is a less severe, non-invasive gastrointestinal listeriosis, and the other a more severe and invasive form of listeriosis, “which occurs when the Listeria spreads beyond the intestines.”
The less severe form often leaders to milder symptoms like fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea that can last anywhere from one to three days.
The more severe, life-threatening form of the disease, may include symptoms like headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.
“Invasive listeriosis is a potentially life-threatening event, especially for newborns, adults over the age of 65, and those with weakened immune systems,” the CDC reported.
In addition, the disease poses a particular risk for pregnant women. Symptoms can be mild or go undetected, but even those can have severe outcomes, including miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or a life-threatening infection of the newborn.
