Matchday 1 Predictions
The 2026-27 competition gets underway on Tuesday with two early 5.45pm kick-offs in Milan and Munich. The most eye-catching fixture of the two is between the reigning league champions in Germany and England, as Bayern Munich host Manchester City.
It is a daunting opening assignment for City. Bayern are ranked second in Opta’s Power Rankings (95.9) and boast an enviable record on home soil in this competition. They went unbeaten across their five UWCL home matches last season (W4 D1) and have lost just one of their last 16 at home in Europe (W11 D4), a 2-0 defeat to Lyon in the quarter-finals of the 2024-25 campaign.
The supercomputer expects Bayern to make the most of that home advantage, with the German champions winning 52.4% of its 10,000 pre-match simulations. City, meanwhile, came out on top in 23.3%, underlining the size of the challenge awaiting them on their return to the competition.
The other early kick-off on Tuesday is between Inter and Häcken, with the home side making their UWCL debut in front of their own fans. While the Italians will be hoping to mark the occasion with a statement result, the Swedish club are slight favourites according to the supercomputer, winning 55.9% of simulations as they return to the competition for the first time since reaching the quarter-finals in 2023-24.
Arsenal, winners of the competition in 2024-25, begin their latest European campaign at home to HB Køge.
The Gunners have yet to fully hit their stride domestically, opening the WSL season with a 1-0 win at Brighton before being held by Crystal Palace and Manchester United at Emirates Stadium. Despite registering 47 shots across those two home matches, Arsenal scored just once, relying on a stoppage-time equaliser against United to extend their unbeaten run.
No English team have lost to Danish opposition in the UWCL since the north London club’s 5-1 defeat to Fortuna Hjørring in the 2002-03 semi-final (W7 D3 since), and the Opta supercomputer expects Arsenal to secure all three points in this one.
