September 20th – September 25th (pool swimming) Prelims at 10am local (9pm previous night ET)/Finals at 5pm local (4am ET) Tokyo Aquatics Centre LCM (50m) Meet Central Entries Live Results Recaps Prelims: Day 1 | Day 2 Finals: Day 1 | Day 213-year-old Yu Zidi lit the world ablaze again on Monday at the Asian Games in Tokyo, Japan, swimming 2:06.10 in the 200 IM.
That swim is a new Chinese Record, Asian Record, World Junior Record, and the 2nd-fastest swim in the history of the event.
The previous Chinese and Asian Records were Yu Yiting‘s swim of 2:06.82 at June’s Chinese National Championships. The previous Asian Games Record was a 2:07.75 set by her countrymate Yu Yiting at the last edition in 2023. Yu Yiting finished 2nd on Monday.
The previous World Junior Record was a 2:06.56 done by Summer McIntosh at the 2024 Olympic Games when she was 18.

When asked if she was nervous before the race, she remarked that she just focused on the details of what she needed to do.
As Yu Zidi now turns toward Summer McIntosh‘s World Record, her relative areas of strength and weakness come into focus. While Yu Zidi has made improvements in her backstroke split, they still lag behind McIntosh pretty substantially, though she makes up for it with a much better breaststroke leg.
Yu Zidi going out faster than the 200 fly World Record holder McIntosh is interesting, and likely more a choice of pacing than anything, which could partially explain the scale of the backstroke gap.

She finished that meet with 4th place finishes in the 200 IM, 400 IM, and 200 fly, plus a bronze medal as a prelims leg of China’s 800 free relay.
Earlier in this meet, she won the 200 fly in 2:05.08, which was also a new Asian Games Record.
Yu Zidi turns 14 on October 16, meaning she was born after the London Olympics.
