Multiple protesters are taking legal action after the village of Broadview confirmed 10 people were sprayed with mace by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents outside an immigration detention facility on Saturday.
Video from the scene showed several agents spraying protesters, some of whom were wearing masks. A person could also be seen crawling away from the chaos as mace was sprayed by an agent nearby.
Protesters said they believe federal agents acted out of line and used unnecessary force. They also disputed claims made by police over what led to the confrontation.
Village officials said of the 10 protesters who were maced, two had to be hospitalized. Members of the Coalition Against Broadview ICE Facility are calling for a federal investigation and pushing for body camera video of the incident to be released. A village of Broadview spokesperson told NBC Chicago the protesters were staging in the middle of the street and blocking agents from coming and going from the facility.
Protesters who were sprayed denied those allegations.
“Broadview ICE agents continued to open and close the gate and taunting us,” said protestor Jennifer Almodovar. “Once the gate had opened, they had rushed out and then they started an altercation with the protesters and begin to what we believe was bear spray.”
The Department of Homeland Security said in a statement, “Our officers are highly trained in de-escalation tactics and regularly receive ongoing use of force training. Anyone who obstructs federal law enforcement is committing a federal crime.”
As for any new demonstrations Sunday, NBC Chicago crews outside the ICE facility reported a largely quiet scene.
