If Bregman has avoided a serious injury, the Cubs might therefore sit him without putting him on the 10-day injured list, as a minimum 10-day absence would stretch into the postseason.
The worst-case scenario, of course, is that Bregman has sustained a serious concussion or a facial fracture that would take him out of consideration entirely for Chicago’s playoff roster. In that scenario, the Cubs would turn to Matt Shaw and Pedro Ramirez for third base duty. While this set-up isn’t bad as a Plan B, obviously losing Bregman would be a huge hit to the Cubs’ postseason hopes.
Bregman had a hit and a walk in his first two plate appearances today, continuing his red-hot second half. After signing a seven-year, $175MM free agent deal this past winter, it took a while for Bregman to get going, as he entered the All-Star break hitting only .241/.336/.359 in 431 plate appearances. Since then, Bregman has hit .293/.373/.598 in 260 PA, pulling his season-long numbers up to .260/.350/.451 and 26 homers and a 123 wRC+ entering today’s action. He is also enjoying the best defensive season of his career, putting the third baseman in line for his second Gold Glove.
