ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Community members in Rochester gathered on Saturday to mark the fifth annual Daniel Prude Day, calling for changes in how police handle mental health crises.
Activists, artists, and local groups joined to honor Daniel Prude’s legacy.
Prude, a Black man experiencing a mental health crisis while under the influence of PCP, died in 2020 after being taken into custody by the Rochester Police Department. His death was ruled a homicide, but no officers were charged.
Organizers say the gathering is about more than remembrance — it’s a demand for accountability and safer communities.
“We are going to make sure that we as a community are taken care of. We are stood up for. We are being protected. And even if nobody else is going to decide to do it for us, if nobody else is going to decide that they are going to stand with us, stand for us and be behind us, then we will be behind ourselves,” said Zion Stafford.
Organizers continue to push for passage of Daniel’s Law, which would replace police with peer-led response teams for mental health calls.
