Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias was promoted to that role leading into the 2025 season. Since then, the team has gone 150-167 (.473) and may finish last in the AL East for the second consecutive season. With the emergence of Adley Rutschman and a strong supporting cast in Anthony Santander, Ryan Mountcastle, starter Kyle Bradish, and closer Félix Bautista, the stage was finally set for Baltimore to become perennial contenders.
Unfortunately, the Orioles got swept in the Division Series that year by the eventual World Series-winning Rangers. In 2024, Baltimore had a regular season record of 91-71 but again got swept in the playoffs, this time by the Royals in the Wild Card Series. Manager Brandon Hyde was fired after 43 games, and while the team played one game over .500 the rest of the way under Tony Mansolino, Elias installed Albernaz atop the dugout for the 2026 season.
Albernaz, a first-time MLB manager, was positioned to lead the Orioles back to contention. That obviously didn’t happen this year. Still, it makes sense that Elias sees him returning in 2027. While the terms of Albernaz’s contract were not disclosed, big league managers are typically signed to multi-year deals. A host of injuries contributed role in this year’s struggles, which Albernaz can’t really be blamed for. Roster-wise, the O’s shipped Rutschman to Boston and Taylor Ward to the Mariners at the trade deadline, but they still have Samuel Basallo, Pete Alonso, Gunnar Henderson, Shane Baz, Bradish, and Bautista as key pieces. All except Bautista are controlled through at least 2028.
With that group in place, the Orioles will look at this year as a temporary setback and retool for another run at contention in 2027. Under Elias and owner David Rubenstein, they’ll continue to leverage a higher payroll than they did during the rebuild. Per Cot’s Contracts, the team increased its payroll from near the bottom of the league in 2023 to a middle-of-the-pack $165.6MM in 2025. MLBTR’s Payroll Tracker has the O’s at $169,289,112 in cash payroll at the moment, along with a $222,242,106 payroll for competitive balance purposes. The latter figure is $43.4MM higher than last year, but still safely under the first luxury tax threshold.
Between the departures of Chris Bassitt, Andrew Kittredge, Trevor Rogers, Zach Eflin (whose $25MM mutual option will be bought out for $2MM), and Luis Robert Jr. (whose $20MM club option should also be bought out), Baltimore will have a good amount of financial wiggle room if they so much as match this year’s payroll in 2027. Elias and company will surely use some of that to add complementary pieces, ideally in the rotation.
Aside from the players, Elias will also be looking to expand the club’s front office. Speaking to MLB.com’s Jake Rill, Elias noted that he may look for a GM to serve under him. He also emphasized that the Orioles want fresh voices and are therefore looking at outside hires rather than internal promotions.
“We’re on the smaller side and we would like to explore outside help and outside talent,” Elias said of the current front office (link via Rill). “The owners and I have been discussing that. They’re very supportive, and they will be very supportive of anyone new that we bring in this organization, as well… We want to enhance the department, get bigger, get better. And we’re going to be leaning into that quite a bit this fall.”
The dual structure of having a president of baseball operations and a GM is quite common nowadays. Elias would obviously still be the top decision-maker in baseball ops, but adding a GM could nonetheless add a fresh voice and aid in key efforts like scouting and strategy. Rill did not list any specific executives on Elias’ shopping list, though serious conversations won’t begin until the offseason in any case.
