The Red Sox are in a good position as far as their postseason rotation goes. Sonny Gray, Ranger Suarez, and Payton Tolle will get the nods in a three-game series, and Jake Bennett, Patrick Sandoval, and Brayan Bello may be considered for the fourth rotation spot should the Sox advance to the Division Series. The bullpen has performed well this year, although it could use some reinforcement in light of the shoulder soreness that’s affecting Aroldis Chapman at the moment.
Bello started last night and threw eight innings of one-run, 11-strikeout ball last night. That was just his second start since being recalled from Triple-A Worcester in July. The Sox could use him as a multi-inning fireman, at least in the first round of the playoffs. They may get additional reinforcements back from the injured list.
The first to return is right-hander Tyron Guerrero, whom the Red Sox have officially activated off the 10-day injured list, per a team announcement. Fellow righty Wyatt Olds gets optioned to Worcester to clear an active roster spot. Guerrero had been out since September 1st with right shoulder inflammation, but when healthy, he’s been a solid reliever for Boston. He has a 3.26 ERA in 38 appearances, showcasing pristine control, a triple-digit sinker, and a penchant for inducing grounders over half the time. The ERA estimators, including Guerrero’s 2.80 expected ERA and 3.00 SIERA, are similarly bullish.
Guerrero returned to the Majors this year after a six-year absence interspersed with minor league deals and a couple stints in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. Considering that context and the fact that Guerrero is 35 years old, the Sox are thrilled with how he’s performed this year. Garrett Whitlock and Erik Miller are the main setup options in front of Chapman, so Guerrero and Greg Weissert figure to take the medium-leverage spots in the postseason.
Right-hander Tanner Houck could also factor into the postseason mix if his rehab wraps up well, according to the Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham. Houck, who underwent Tommy John surgery in August of last year, allowed one earned run in 3 1/3 innings yesterday for Worcester. That makes two appearances for Houck at the Red Sox’ top affiliate and four overall since beginning a rehab assignment earlier this month. Per the team’s official injury report at MLB.com, the team isn’t planning any additional rehab appearances, so his next appearance may be on a big league mound during Boston’s final homestand.
Houck, now 30 years old, made 30 starts in 2024 with a 3.12 ERA and an excellent 55.9% ground ball rate. The strikeouts were a bit below average, but he made up for it by posting a strong 6.5% walk rate and keeping the ball in the park. Houck was averaging 93.5 mph on his sinker during that 2024 campaign and 94.5 mph during his injury-shortened 2025 season. That could play up in short relief if the Sox decide to roster him. Alternatively, he could be used in long relief, given he’s been stretched out to multiple innings at Worcester.
Garrett Crochet also continues to make progress. He threw a two-inning side session yesterday, and interim manager Chad Tracy told Abraham and others that Crochet will face live hitters at Fenway Park this week. Tracy was noncommittal about getting Crochet into a game. “I think it just depends on how he feels coming out of it, how much volume we give him,” Tracy told reporters. “Do we give him more hitters or do we want to put him in a game? It’s hard to say until you know how he feels.” As previously reported, Crochet will be limited to relief if he does make it back.
On the hitting side, center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela faced live pitching yesterday, the first time he had done so since going on the IL on September 3rd for a right quad strain. Per Abraham, Rafaela will try running at 100% effort today and hopes to appear in Tuesday’s game against the Guardians. A healthy Rafaela will obviously be a huge benefit to Boston’s playoff lineup. He is one of the game’s best defenders in center field, earning a league-leading +20 Defensive Runs Saved along with +15 Outs Above Average, which ranks second behind the Cubs’ Pete-Crow Armstrong. Rafaela also has a 108 wRC+ at the plate, making him the team’s third-best qualified hitter.
