Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge offered some details on his calf strain ahead of Saturday’s matchup against the Diamondbacks. The three-time MVP told reporters he’s dealing with an injury to the soleus muscle in his calf, which he described as “a little more crucial with running and hitting and all those kinds of things,” as relayed by Brendan Kuty of The Athletic.
Judge was placed on the 10-day IL earlier today, retroactive to Thursday. A minimum stint would allow him to come back for New York’s final regular season game.
“I’d like to be back by the postseason,” Judge said (h/t Bryan Hoch of MLB.com). “That’s definitely the plan. [It’s the] 10-day IL, so the 10th day is probably the last game of the season. So we’ll see. I’ve got really no answers for you on any timeline or anything like that.”
The Yankees clinched a postseason bid earlier this week. Unless they can catch the Rays over the final week of the regular season, the club is likely going to be the top AL Wild Card team. New York seems headed toward a matchup against division rival Boston in the first round. The series would begin on September 29.
It’s unclear how much time, if any, Judge would need to get himself back into playing shape. He said he’s able to work out and throw while dealing with the calf strain. He did not go on a rehab assignment before coming back from the rib injury that cost him three months. His return did not go well. Judge went 4-for-23 with 13 strikeouts in seven games off the IL.
Manager Aaron Boone didn’t offer a timeline or any further insight on the severity of Judge’s injury. “It doesn’t matter what grade it is,” Boone said, per Hoch. “We have nine games left. We’re going to get him back, or we’re not. That’s what we’re going to work to do, and we’ll see.”
The Yankees are used to being without Judge at this point. The club has rolled with Cody Bellinger, Spencer Jones, and Heliot Ramos in the outfield recently. Jones wasn’t in the lineup tonight as he deals with a sore left foot, but he downplayed the issue to reporters before the game (h/t Greg Joyce of the New York Post).
